Fitting with today's safety theme, here's a question?
Who has health insurance*?
It's not like we ever plan to get in an accident, but there are some crashes even the best gear won't help with. Besides, as much as doctor bills cost, that could go towards another bike or more gear. I'd talked to a couple other guys who'd had pins and plates put in from an accident to the tune of $38,000 (hello 1098R)- not including the ambulance and associated fees, or physical therapy. Spinal injury, head CT, or severe facial injury? Better plan on knocking over a bank or two. They can't garnish your wages to make you pay it in full, but you'll have a hell of a time getting a credit application through for years and years down the road.
By the way- you have 72 hours to go to an emergency room after an accident, or the insurance company doesn't cover it in full (ask how I'm spending another $91 in addition to my hospital copay for the little get-off I had two months ago. :-/ )
*I DON'T WANT TO HEAR "But Canada has socialized health care..." Canada also has only 1/9 the (documented) population of the U.S.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the first bike advice. So now I'm looking at bikes, and considering buying used. What sort of things should I look out for? I don't have any biker friends to help me out.

Yesterday, I was sitting in a right turn lane at a red light with a car in front of me, and another bike behind me. There was still a section of straight road before we turned (the stop line was pretty far away from the intersection due to a set of train tracks - Intersection here), and as we pulled up closer to the intersection (but before entering it), the bike behind me tried to pass me on the right, just as I was about to turn right. Completely freaked me out and I honked at him, but I dont think he got the message, as he didnt fall back. Thing is, though, with the car in front of us, there was nowhere for him to go. We turned the corner, almost side by side (I took the turn much wider than usual). The speed limit was about 25mph, but flow of traffic is usually closer to 35-40, and he then passed me (in my lane, on the right) at about 50.
Now, lane splitting is legal here, but I NEVER pass another rider in their lane in city traffic (unless they're stopped, obviously), though mostly because there's just no need. And to try to pass on the right, moments before a right turn? Is there any world where that's acceptable?
Edit: I should add - he was fully geared, on a touring bike with several bags. Not the stereotypical squid. And I think that was one of the main reasons it startled me - it was just so completely unexpected. Maybe he's just more used to open freeways?

Добрый день. А если тут кто-нибудь из Калуги? Очень хочу начать заниматься. Могу быть полезен так как руки растут из нужного места. Есть опыт в смежной области - жонглирование холодным оружием.

I just got new tires put on. I got the BT45s.
Now, my front tire is a 110/80/18 and the rear is a 150/80/16. There are very few companies that make such a combination.
Now here's the deal, the guy at the bike shop said that the front tire is actually a rear tire. But the fact that there are only 3 manufacturers (at least on bikebandit) that make my combination, I don't have too much choice in the matter.
Does that mean I will now die?
That being said, new tires feel great! Like putting on new underwear for the first time!
EDIT:
Looks like I'm an idiot and ordered the wrong tire.
fuckfuckfuck.

Ok folks. I'm in need of some help here.
Over on the sportbikes.net FZ6 forums, a gentleman posted up pictures of his bike's very bad coating of a red dust, located ONLY on the drive shaft side.
( Picture is cut for your viewing pleasure )
One member jumped on it as the "red dust of death" that Yamaha Warrior (motorcycle) owners see as their drive shaft nut is backing off, and the sprocket is eating the splines on the output shaft.
This comment scared me quite a bit as I've been noticing the same red dust, though not nearly as bad, so I pulled my cover off and found this.
( Cut for your viewing pleasure, take 2 )
Now, when I pulled off the cover, expecting to see nastiness in the form of mangled output shafts, I found this.
( You know the drill )
Since I was lacking any tools to check the torque on the nut, I simply tugged and pulled on the sprocket to see if there was any play, of which there was none.
Now, I know my chain has been neglected. I'm a bad fizzer owner for that. I am tempted to clean the chain and around the sprocket to see if the dust returns. I'm also half tempted to just replace the chain and sprocket, as some things I've read have said that the "red dust of death" is a sign that the chain is about to go belly up.
For comparison sake, the chain on the other guy's bike looks like this.
( Yup )
Now, I'm at a complete loss as to what could be the problem, as his chain looks immaculate (the bike's an 07) while mine looks beat to hell (it's an 04), yet his bike is COATED with red dust, while mine is just, well, a dusting.
Thoughts?

Help!!!!!
I"m in Yellowstone right now with a dead Yamaha v-star 650. I've got two very very handy mechanical men with me who mostly know what they are doing. What we don't have, and what I can't seem to find online is a wiring diagram for the bike. Yes, I should have brought my repair manual with me.
Does anyone have one they can email me, or a link to one online? respond and I"ll post my email address.
THANK YOU
